Positioning & Installation Tips

Position the nest box so it is sheltered from strong wind, heavy rain, and direct sunlight. The front of the box should be angled slightly downwards to help prevent rain from entering. When installing, use galvanised or stainless steel screws or nails to avoid rusting.  Ensure the box is placed out of reach of cats and squirrels, and install it high up on a wall—at least 3 metres above the ground—for added protection.

When to Clean Your Nest Box

Clean the box once a year in autumn (September to October) after the breeding season has ended. Always ensure the nest box is empty before cleaning. Avoid cleaning during spring or summer when birds may be nesting.

How to Clean Your Nest Box

1. Open the box and remove all old nesting material.

2. Thoroughly brush out any debris, paying attention to corners and drainage holes.

3. Wash the box with hot water only—avoid harsh chemicals.

4. Let the box dry completely before closing it again.
